2024 Contributors

Contributors to the Women’s Report are experts on their respective topics and are invited to write about issues of importance related to the theme of the Report. This year’s Women’s Report promotes gender-sensitive information sharing about women’s health concerns such as toxic stress, cancer, menopause, and pregnancy in the workplace.

Dr Antonella Silver

Paper 1: Menopause and the Modern Working Woman

Dr Antonella Silver is a University of Pretoria-trained obstetrician and gynaecologist currently sub-specialising in maternal–foetal medicine at the University of Pretoria and serving as a consultant at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. Dr Silver’s unwavering commitment to improving maternal health is truly inspiring. She has played a pivotal role in implementing innovative and effective maternity care practices at MRC, where she emphasised the importance of respectful and compassionate care for expectant mothers. Her dedication to ensuring the well-being of both mothers and their unborn babies is commendable. Passionate about women’s health, Dr Silver focuses on addressing the often-neglected extremes of age. She tirelessly advocates for the well-being of elderly women burdened by malignancies, providing them with the support and guidance they need during challenging times. Additionally, she is deeply invested in the welfare of adolescent girls who face pressures and uncertainties in premarital relationships, striving to provide them with comprehensive contraceptive care and support.

Prof. Renata Schoeman

Paper 1: Women and Stress in the Workplace — Eustress or Distress?

Prof. Renata Schoeman is a psychiatrist and holds appointments as associate professor in leadership and as head of the MBA in Healthcare Leadership (Stellenbosch Business School). She serves on the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Mental Health and on advisory boards of various pharmaceutical companies. Renata co-founded the Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation. She has received numerous awards during her career, the most recent being the Media Excellence Awards as Thought Leader (2018 and 2019) and Newsmaker (2019) from the University of Stellenbosch. She was honoured as a Mental Health Hero by the Discovery Foundation (2019) and by Welum (2021). In 2022, she was recognised by Prestige South Africa as Psychiatrist of the Year.

Prof. Salome Maswime

Paper 3: Working while Pregnant — Balancing Two Worlds

Prof. Salome Maswime is the Head of the Global Surgery Division at the University of Cape Town. She is an obstetrician and gynaecologist, a member of the FIGO Committee on Ethical Aspects of Human Reproduction, a member of the United Nations Core Stillbirths Estimates Group, and chairperson of the Health Systems Trust Board. She has received numerous awards for her contribution to healthcare, including the Trailblazer and Young Achiever award by the President of South Africa, in 2017. In 2023, she was the recipient of the NSTF SA MRC Clinician Scientist award for pioneering Global Surgery in Africa.

Mia Barnard

Paper 4: Supporting woman employees with breast cancer

Mia Barnard is director and co-founder of Just Breathe in Care of Cancer, a non-profit organisation that offers reliable education materials and care packages to cancer patients in different stages of treatment. She is an industrial engineer and experienced manager with a demonstrated history of working in the healthcare industry as an administrator in private practice. She recognises the potential of innovative technologies, and is passionate about participating in change initiatives that inspire, design, create, and implement improvements in the South African private and public health care industry.
